While I consider all of my clients unique and I love and appreciate the opportunity to meet and connect with them in their realness, one client has stood out the most in my years in practice. Some time in the summer of 1999, I was hired by a 40 something son to do Reiki on his widowed Mother. It was a home visit so I went to her house in Montgomery County. It was a warm day and she had on short sleeves. As I started to do Reiki on her, I saw the numbers tattooed on her inner forearm. I had to stifle the immediate urge to sob. I looked her in they eye I asked her if it was Ok if I put my hands there on her arm. She said "of course". As I worked on her we chatted. She was a Holocaust survivor. Both of her parents and all 10 of her siblings were killed in the camps. When she was liberated , she emigrated to the U.S., Jenkintown PA, specifically, where she met her husband. He too was a Holocaust survivor. Both of his parents and 10 of his 11 siblings were killed in the camps. She went on to tell me how happy and blessed their lives were until his death of ALS, which she referred to as her "second Holocaust." They had 2 children, several grandchildren, and they started and built a successful business. Being unable to comprehend the depths of what they experienced, I asked her how they did it and she said, "first of all if we cried we would never stop so we did not cry. And every time we laughed it was our revenge against Hilter. So we laughed as much as possible and had as much joy as possible." I have thought of her many many times since that day. I never saw her after our one and only session. She very nicely told me that "even though I was a sweet girl, she did not believe in this Reiki stuff and did not want her son wasting his money." Once was enough for me. Meeting her was one of my life's greatest privileges.
